Production agriculture is certainly a high risk undertaking. The Risk Management Essay Contest helps students develop an understanding of the principles of risk management and learn how to select the proper strategies to minimize risk and maximize returns
In essence, the contest aims to help young agricultural entrepreneurs understand how to manage business-related risks. FFA members who manage a small business through their Supervised Agricultural Experience (SAE) are encouraged to write essays about the strategies they use to minimize risks and maximize returns in their SAE.
Only 10 winning essays are selected each year by National FFA on the basis of content, adherence to the assigned topic, grammar, organization, originality and creativity.

We are excited to report that one of those winning essays came from Nebraska.
Congratulations to Patrick Arkfeld of Lourdes Central Catholic!
Arkfeld's essay focused on his efforts of raising purebred Duroc sows and related research.
Each of the winners and their advisor traveled to Washington, D.C., all expenses paid, for a special USDA Risk Management Agency/FFA Day. While in Washington, students and advisors met with USDA officials and members of Congress and were recognized in a special ceremony.
